Description
To grow Rotala rotundifolia ‘Orange Juice’ successfully, you need to focus on high lighting and nutrient management to maintain its signature vibrant orange hue. While it can survive in low-tech setups, it will often remain green or pale without specific interventions.
Core Growing Requirements
- Lighting: High lighting is essential for the “Orange Juice” variety to develop its namesake color. Under moderate light, it may stay light pink or green.
- CO2 Injection: Highly recommended. Although technically possible to grow without it, CO2 injection prevents stunted growth and is the most reliable way to achieve dense, bushy stems.
- Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 60°F to 82°F (ideal range around 72-78°F).
- pH: 6.0 – 7.5.
- Hardness: Prefers soft to moderately hard water.
- Coloration & Nutrition Tips Iron Supplementation: Adding high iron through liquid fertilizers or root tabs will significantly increase the intensity of the orange and red hues.
- Nitrate Limitation: To deepen the orange/red tones, many advanced aquarists use nitrate limitation (keeping nitrates between 0–5ppm). Note that this requires careful monitoring to avoid starving the plant.
- Substrate: A nutrient-rich aquarium soil provides the best foundation for its rapid root growth.
- Trimming: This is a fast-growing plant. Regular pruning is required to prevent the top canopy from shading out the bottom leaves, which will otherwise rot.
- Bushy Growth: After trimming, the remaining stem will typically sprout 2–3 new shoots from the cut node, leading to a much thicker look.
- Propagation: Simply cut the top 3-4 inches of a healthy stem and replant it into the substrate. Use aqua scaping tweezers to avoid crushing the fragile stems.
-
Placement in the Tank Background/Midground: Because it grows tall (up to 12″+), it is best used as a background plant or kept in the midground through frequent trimming.
- Spacing: Plant individual stems about 0.5 inches apart to allow light to reach the bottom nodes and give
