Caring for a purple mystery snail requires maintaining a clean, well-filtered tank with hard, alkaline water and a steady supply of calcium and vegetables. Because these peaceful freshwater snails produce a lot of waste, they do best in a 10-gallon or larger aquarium with pristine water and a secure lid to prevent escapes.
Key Care Requirements
1. Water Parameters
Mystery snails are highly sensitive to water quality and their shells will erode in acidic or soft water.

- Temperature: 68 to 84°F (20 to 29°C). A comfortable median like 75°F is ideal for promoting healthy shell growth without shortening their lifespan.
- pH Level: 7.6 to 8.4. Anything below 7.0 is too acidic and will damage the shell.
- Water Hardness: Moderate to high. Keep general hardness (GH) and carbonate hardness (KH) around 12 to 18.
- Safety Note: They are extremely sensitive to copper and salt. Avoid medications and plant fertilizers containing copper, and always use a water conditioner that detoxifies heavy metals.
2. Diet & Calcium
Despite their reputation as tank cleaners, mystery snails will starve if only left to eat aquarium algae.

- Daily Meals: Feed sinking pellets, algae wafers, or high-quality bottom-feeder tablets.
- Vegetables: They love blanched vegetables like zucchini, spinach, kale, and cucumber. Boil for 2-3 minutes to soften, let it cool, and remove uneaten pieces after 24 hours to keep the tank clean.
- Calcium: Essential for building and maintaining a beautiful purple shell. You can add calcium by floating a cuttlebone in the water or using aquatic mineral supplements.
3. Habitat Setup

- Substrate: Sand or smooth gravel is best to protect their soft, muscular foot from getting scratched.
- Lid: A tight-fitting lid is an absolute must. Mystery snails love to climb above the waterline to breathe and can easily crawl right out of the tank.
