Grow the Madagascar lace plant (Aponogeton madagascariensis) by planting its bulb halfway into a nutrient-rich substrate, leaving the crown exposed. Maintain cool freshwater temperatures between 64°F and 74°F, moderate lighting, and pristine water with a pH of 6.5–7.5. It is a heavy root feeder that requires regular fertilization.
Key Requirements for Success
- Temperature: This is the most critical factor for success. The Madagascar lace plant is not a tropical plant. It thrives in cool, shaded water between 64°F and 74°F (18°C–23°C). Temperatures consistently above 75°F will trigger a dormant phase or cause rapid leaf decay.
- Substrate & Nutrients: Because it has an extensive root system and stores energy in its bulb, it needs a high-quality, nutrient-dense substrate (like aqua soil or aquatic loam). Use aquarium root tabs placed near its base every 2–4 months to support its heavy feeding habits.
- Water Flow: In nature, this plant grows in fast-moving streams. Providing moderate to strong water filtration mimics this habitat, helps keep its broad leaves clean, and prevents algae from growing in the natural holes in the leaves.
- Lighting: Medium lighting is ideal. Extremely bright light, common with newer LED aquarium fixtures, can trigger early dormancy and promote pesky algae growth on the lace windows. Aim for a 10 to 12-hour photoperiod.
- Tank Mates: Because the leaves are delicate, avoid plant-eating fish (like goldfish, Oscars, or certain cichlids) and large or destructive snails. Peaceful nano fish, such as tetras or White Cloud Mountain minnows, make perfect companions.
Handling Dormancy
This plant naturally undergoes seasonal dormant periods where the leaves may wither and die back. If this happens, leave the bulb in the tank as long as it remains firm and healthy. Continue to provide water flow and nutrients, and new leaves should sprout within a few weeks.
