Description
Ludwigia ‘Super Mini Red’ is a hardy, fast-growing aquatic stem plant known for its vibrant red foliage. To bring out its most intense red coloration, provide medium to high lighting, a nutrient-rich substrate, and regular fertilization. It is a good choice for aquascapes, suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists.
Key care requirements
- Lighting: Medium to high lighting is the most important factor for achieving a deep red color. Insufficient light will cause the plant to turn green and grow leggy.
- Substrate and fertilization:
- Substrate: A nutrient-rich substrate is ideal for promoting strong root growth. You can use a planted aquarium soil or supplement regular gravel with root tabs.
- Fertilizers: Regular dosing with a comprehensive liquid fertilizer containing iron and other micronutrients is recommended, especially in higher-light tanks. Iron is crucial for vibrant red color.
- CO2 injection: While not strictly necessary, supplementing with CO2 will significantly boost the plant’s growth rate and color intensity.
- Water parameters: This plant is adaptable to a range of water conditions, but performs best in the following:
- Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C).
- pH: Slightly acidic to neutral, in the range of 6.0–7.5.
- Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water.
- Placement and trimming:
- Placement: Its compact size makes it an excellent choice for the midground or background, often planted in groups of several stems for a bushier effect.
- Trimming: Regular pruning is essential to maintain its shape and encourage dense, bushy growth. To propagate, simply cut the healthy tops and replant them in the substrate
