Description

Live Moss Balls (Marimo) Lab Grown USA – Not wild harvested or imported  cultivated in the USA
Size – 1 inch
To care for a Marimo moss ball, keep it submerged in clean, cool water under low to medium indirect light. Despite their common name, Marimo are not actually moss, but a rare form of spherical freshwater algae native to cold lake beds. Because they require minimal maintenance, they are exceptionally easy to look after.
Water and Temperature Rules
    • Water type: Use clean tap water, filtered water, or bottled spring water. Avoid distilled water because it lacks the natural minerals they need to absorb.
    • Water changes: Replace the water every 1 to 2 weeks to prevent stagnation and waste buildup. Clean the container walls at the same time.
    • Temperature: Keep the water temperature cool, ideally below 75°F (24°C).
    • Summer tip: If room temperatures skyrocket during hot months, move your Marimo container into the refrigerator for up to 24 hours to cool them down.

Light Requirements
    • Indirect light: Place them in a spot that receives low to moderate indirect household light.
    • No direct sun: Never place the glass container in direct sunlight. The glass acts like a magnifying glass, intensifying heat and quickly cooking your Marimo.
    • Airflow: If keeping them in a closed jar or terrarium, open the lid weekly to allow for oxygen and fresh air circulation.

Cleaning and Maintenance Routine
Because they do not have a natural current to move them in a jar or tank, you have to simulate lake currents yourself. Follow these steps during every water change:
  1. Take it out: Gently lift the Marimo ball out of its container.
  2. Wash and squeeze: Hold it under slow-running cool tap water or inside a bowl of clean water. Gently squeeze it several times to flush out trapped dirt and organic debris.
  3. Roll to reshape: Gently roll the ball between your palms like a piece of dough. This helps maintain its round shape, keeps it from flattening, and encourages the algae filaments to knit together tightly.
  4. Rotate: Drop it back into the container, letting a different side face upward so all parts receive equal light.
  5. Special Note Marimo are cultivated in specialized farms rather than harvested from natural habitats. Cultivated Marimo is authentic and easier to care for compared to natural Marimo. Natural Marimo is protected by the Japanese government and cannot be harvested or sold.
