Description

PIRATE FERN AKA JAVA FERN (Leptochilus Pteropus) ; are a popular choice for freshwater aquariums because they are easy to care for and can tolerate a variety of conditions:

    • Lighting: Java ferns can tolerate low to moderate light, but too much light can burn the plant or cause algae to grow on the leaves.
    • Water: Java ferns can tolerate a wide range of water temperatures, from the upper 60s to the lower 80s. They can also tolerate soft acidic water, alkaline conditions, and brackish tanks. In a standard aquarium, the water pH should be between 5.5 and 7.0.
    • Fertilizer: Java ferns can absorb nutrients from the water column, so they don’t usually need additional fertilization. However, you can use a liquid aquarium fertilizer to encourage faster growth and better leaf color.
    • Tank size: Java ferns can be kept in a tank that’s at least 10 gallons.
  • Substrate: Java ferns don’t require substrate, so they can be kept in bare bottom tanks. However, if you do use gravel, make sure the leaves and rhizome stay above it.
  • Attachment: Java ferns grow best when attached to wood or rock. You can use string to attach them.
  • Coexistence: Java ferns are hardy and can coexist with most aquatic life.
If your Java fern is losing leaves, has brown or yellow leaves, or has stopped growing new leaves, it could be suffering from a nutrient deficiency
